Water Department Overview
The Sheldon Water
Department operates a 2.3 million gallon/day Iron and Manganese removal
plant. The plant obtains its water from thirteen shallow wells (20-30 feet
deep), and one deep well (600 feet), with the combined pumping capacity of
1,400 gallons per minute. From the wells the water is pumped to the plant
where potassium permanganate is added, this process helps to oxidize the
iron and manganese. Fluoride is added for dental hygiene. From there it
goes through aeration, this is a process of exposing the water to the
atmosphere, which releases gases such as hydrogen sulfide. After aeration
it passes through a detention tank to allow enough contact time for the
potassium permanganate to work then it enters four slow sand filters, this
is where the iron and manganese is filtered out. From the filters the
water goes into a detention tank, this is where chlorine and a blended
poly orthophosphate are added for corrosion control, from there it flows
into a 1.3 million gallon underground clear well which allows the
chlorine, contact time to disinfect the water before it is pumped to the
water tower.

|
Four high-service pumps at the plant draw
water from the clear well, pumping water to the distribution system and to
the water tower, which holds 500,000 gallons. The purpose of the water
tower is to assure that the system has constant pressure.
The system consists of a network of water
pipes from 4" to 10" water mains. These water mains carry water to all of
the fire hydrants and ultimately to all of the customers. |

The Sheldon Water Department routinely
monitors for constituents in the treated water on a daily basis, in the
lab at the water treatment plant. Readings of the quality of the finished
water are recorded and reported to the appropriate federal and state
agencies. We are happy to report that our drinking water is safe and meets
all the federal and state requirements.

We are also in the process of developing a
Wellhead Protection program to ensure that we keep our water as safe as we
possibly can for years to come. Also, we are a member of the Lewis and
Clark Rural Water System. This system will bring us quality water from the
Missouri River; this is another way that we are working to keep our
drinking water safe and reliable.
If you have any question about the
Sheldon Water Department, please contact the City manager at 712-324-4651
or the Water Superintendent at 712-324-2845.

Waste Water Overview
The Sheldon Waste Water treatment plant is an
Iowa grade III plant. It is classified grade III due to the city
population. At the plant there is one grade III superintendent, one grade
II operator, and one grade I operator.
The plant is a mechanical, R.B.C. (Rotating
Biological Contactor) facility. Which means the plant has R.B.C.’s that
actually grow biological film that feed off of the waste in the raw
sewage. We must maintain at least an 85% removal rate of the harmful
wastes in the sewage, which is monitored by the State DNR office, Iowa
Region #3. Some of the harmful wastes we are tested for include, CBOD,
Total Suspended Solids, Ph, temp, Dissolved oxygen, and Ammonia to name a
few. At the plant our removal of pollutants is better than 90% before it
enters the Floyd River. Also the plant is equipped with an alarm system,
which will send an alarm to the Police dispatcher and in return he/she
calls the person who is on call. The plant is also equipped with an automatic
starting generator, which automatically starts when power is lost.
On an average we treat about 850,000 gallons
per day during average dry weather. We have two major contributors into
our sanitary sewers, which include, AGP and Rosenboom Machine and Tool. We
must also test the sewage that these major contributors send to the plant.
Throughout the city we have six sewage lift
stations, which carry sewage from lower elevations of the city to the
plant. All of our lift stations will soon be equipped with alarm systems,
which will also send an alarm to the Police dispatcher. Soon all lift
stations will be equipped with generators or be able to have a portable
generator hooked directly to them in case of power outages.
The City Street Department takes care of our
collection system. At least once a year they go out and jet all of our
sanitary sewers.
Much time and energy are spent trying to
provide for a cleaner, better Effluent quality before any water enters the
Floyd River.
